Who We Are
Somali National Association of the Deaf (SONAD) is the national association of Deaf people within and without Somalia. SONAD was formed in Somalia in 2006 in Mogadishu, Somalia. SONAD represents the diverse interests of Deaf Somalis and is the only Ordinary Member for Somalia at the World Federation of the Deaf in Helsinki, Finland.
Mission
SONAD mission is to ensure that Somali deaf community have the right like any other Somali citizen. To ensure that Somali deaf community are respected as member of their community. SONAD advocates for the human right of Somali deaf community. SONAD is trying to develop Somali sign language, maintain Somali sign language as main communication and education language for the Somali deaf community. To ensure that humanitarian organizations, the government of Somalia and the Somali society to be aware about deaf culture and Somali deaf community needs.
Vision
Somali sign language to be used as main language in education and communication for Somali deaf community. Somali deaf community empowered with education, employment and life opportunities.
