Achievements
SONAD has achieved a lot since the establishment date in 2007. It has advocated and provided education and training to Deaf in Somalia. It has also raised the agenda against deaf discrimination among the society. The main achievements were:
1. Primary and Secondary School for Deaf
The school has been established in 2007 and started with 60 students. Due to fights between the Islamists and Ethiopia the school been close for 4 months and the reopened in the late of 2007. The numbers of deaf students were increasing day after day till they reached 300 students.
After the security problems increased in Mogadishu most of the parents were afraid to send their children to the school. Now the school in Hodan and the number of students now are 126 students.
2. Football team
To interact with society SONAD established football team which participate the different competitions in Mogadishu. The team is 25 players; three players are normal while the remaining 23 players are deaf.
3. Awareness and Campaigns
SONAD also carried awareness against discrimination of the Deaf and advocated to get equal opportunity for the Deaf like other normal people. These awareness were carried through seminars and awareness SONAD Achievements and Success Stories:
- Free Access to Quality Education for Deaf students across Somalia.
- Development and Preparation of the Somali Sign Language Book.
- Training Programs for Teachers of Deaf Students to enhance inclusive learning.
- Free Access to Medical and Health Services for Deaf individuals.
- Active Participation in National and International Conferences and Forums.
- Organizing Collective Iftar Gatherings during the Holy Month of Ramadan for the Deaf community.
- Provision of Food Aid Packages to Underprivileged Deaf Families.
- Continuous Advocacy for the Official Recognition of Somali Sign Language.
- Strong Commitment towards Inclusive Education for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing learners.
