Somali National Association of the Deaf (SONAD) is the national association of Deaf people within and without Somalia. SONAD was formed in Somalia in 2006 in Mogadishu, Somalia. SONAD represents the diverse interests of Deaf Somalis and is the only Ordinary Member for Somalia at the World Federation of the Deaf in Helsinki, Finland.
Our main goal is to address the following:
- Medical Rehabilitation
Medical and rehabilitation treatment does not reach the disabled community in Mogadishu. Due to the high level of security, lack of proper public and private health centers. Most causes of deafness in Somalia is Malaria. So SONAD will focus on rehabilitation of medical center for procuring and treating deafness.
- Educational Rehabilitation
Ignorance is the main enemy of the deaf community; it will be difficult to communicate normal community without education. SONAD established a school for Deaf community for eliminating the ignorance in the deaf community.
- Employment Rehabilitation
The deaf community as part of Somali community they deserve equal rights like other citizens in terms of employment opportunity so SONAD also strive to get equal rights and equal opportunities for deaf community.
